Dural and Middle Dural
Semi-rural acreage on the Old Northern Road, split between two councils. Big homes, big sheds and long driveways.
On the old convict road
Dural is about 36 km north-west of the Sydney CBD on the Old Northern Road, at about 208 m. Middle Dural, just north, is on the same convict-built road. Both are semi-rural and split between The Hills Shire and Hornsby Shire.

Hornsby crossings need an authorised contractor
Where Dural falls under Hornsby Shire Council, the section of driveway across the council verge is a vehicular crossing, and council says these may only be built by concrete contractors it has authorised. Its specification sets a residential concrete crossing at 125 mm thick, 25 MPa minimum, with one layer of SL62 mesh. Ask who is building yours before the job is booked.

Shed hardstand in Dural
The shed hardstand and apron photos on our site are Dural jobs. On acreage like this, we pour the shed slab and the apron in front of it as one job, so the truck and tractor path is concrete right up to the door.

What we build out here
Driveways and the crossing at the road, shed and machinery slabs, hardstand and turning areas, retaining walls, pool surrounds and large outdoor areas.
Excavation included
We do our own cut, fill and base, so one crew handles the job from the first bucket to the final finish, and one price covers it.
Acreage, not patch-ups
Complete jobs on rural and acreage properties, where access, levels and drainage matter as much as the pour itself.
What goes under a Dural driveway or slab?
Dural sits right on the line between two councils, and it is one of the few suburbs where which one assesses your driveway is a real question rather than a formality.
Two specifications, one suburb
Hornsby Shire requires a standard residential crossing at 125 mm with one layer of SL62 mesh, or 150 mm with SL82 for heavy duty, at a maximum gradient of 1 in 4 (25%) and a width of 3.5 to 4.5 metres at the kerbline. The Hills Shire runs a different application entirely and publishes its figures separately. Which set applies to your block depends on where the boundary falls.

The base under the slab
Under Hornsby’s specification, excavation goes to the full depth required for the thickness, and unsuitable material — a CBR below 5 — is replaced with a sub-base of 20 mm fine crushed rock to a minimum depth of 75 mm. On acreage that is usually more digging than a suburban block needs, whichever council ends up assessing it.

How your block gets classified
Slabs and footings for a house or habitable building are designed to AS 2870, which classifies a site by how much the ground is expected to move with moisture — Class A and S are stable to slightly reactive, M moderately, H1 and H2 highly, and E extremely. The more reactive the ground, the more the design has to allow for it. That classification comes from a geotechnical soil test on your property, not from a suburb map, and no honest quote assigns one without it.

Which council is your Dural block in?
The Hornsby / The Hills boundary runs through this suburb. It changes the application, the crossing, and who is allowed to build it.
Both lists name it
The NSW Electoral Commission lists Dural among the localities included wholly or partly in Hornsby Shire, and also among those included wholly or partly in The Hills Shire. Your rates notice, or a section 10.7 planning certificate, names the council that assesses your block.

Under Hornsby
No work may start without written permission, and levels are normally issued within five working days. A vehicular crossing in Hornsby Shire may only be constructed by one of council’s approved Authorised Contractors, carrying public liability insurance of at least $20 million held for six months. Standard residential is 125 mm with one layer of SL62 mesh, at 25 MPa. Council inspects the levels, the formwork and the finished job, with 48 hours notice on the formwork.

Under The Hills
A Vehicular Crossing Request lodged online, paid before residential work commences. The applicant supplies the contractor’s details and a copy of their public liability policy, to a $10 million minimum, and council requires them to be appropriately skilled and experienced. Two inspections — one before any concrete is poured, one at completion — on 24 hours notice.

Driveway approvals in Dural
A new driveway almost always includes the crossing between the road and your boundary. In Dural, the first question is not how it gets built — it is which council assesses it.
First, find out whose it is
The NSW Electoral Commission lists this suburb among the localities included wholly or partly in Hornsby Shire, and also among those included wholly or partly in The Hills Shire. The boundary runs through it. Your rates notice or section 10.7 planning certificate settles it for your block.

Local FAQs
Anything else, call 0468 491 882.
Do you do concreting in Dural?
Yes. We build driveways and crossings, shed slabs, hardstand, retaining walls, pool surrounds and outdoor areas for properties in Dural and the surrounding district, including Middle Dural, Glenorie, Kenthurst and Arcadia.
Is Dural in The Hills or Hornsby council?
Both. Dural is split between The Hills Shire and Hornsby Shire. The council that owns your street sets the rules for the driveway crossing, including who is allowed to build it, so we check before we quote.
Do you also cover Middle Dural?
Yes. We treat Middle Dural as part of the Dural area and work across both with the same crew, the same site preparation and the same free on-site quote.
Do I need council approval for a driveway crossing in Dural?
Yes — the question is which council. The NSW Electoral Commission lists Dural among the localities included wholly or partly in Hornsby Shire, and also among those included wholly or partly in The Hills Shire, so the boundary runs through the suburb. Your rates notice or your section 10.7 planning certificate names the council that assesses your block.
What are the two specifications?
Under Hornsby: written permission before any work, a crossing built only by one of council’s approved Authorised Contractors carrying $20 million public liability for six months, 125 mm with one layer of SL62 mesh at 25 MPa for standard residential or 150 mm with SL82 heavy duty, a maximum gradient of 1 in 4, and three inspections. Under The Hills: an online Vehicular Crossing Request with payment up front, the contractor’s details and a copy of their public liability policy to a $10 million minimum, and two inspections on 24 hours notice.
Does the council boundary change how the slab itself is built?
Not the slab on your own land — that follows AS 2870 and the engineering for your site either way. It changes the crossing between the road and your boundary, which sits on council land, and it changes who you apply to and who is permitted to build it.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Dural?
It depends on the length, how much excavation and base preparation the ground needs, whether an old surface comes out, the crossing at the road, and the finish. Out here it also depends on the run in, because distance and access change how a pour has to be staged. The accurate number comes from seeing the site, and quotes are free.
What’s underneath a Dural driveway or slab?
The base is what the finished job stands on, and on acreage it is usually where the time goes. Hornsby’s specification is explicit about it: excavation to the full depth required for the thickness, and unsuitable material with a CBR below 5 replaced with a sub-base of 20 mm fine crushed rock to at least 75 mm. Beyond the crossing, a site classification under AS 2870 comes from a geotechnical soil test on your block, not from a suburb map.
Which council is my Dural property in?
Check your rates notice or your section 10.7 planning certificate. The NSW Electoral Commission lists Dural among the localities included wholly or partly in Hornsby Shire, and also among those included wholly or partly in The Hills Shire — the boundary runs through the suburb. The answer genuinely matters here, because Hornsby permits only its own approved Authorised Contractors to build a vehicular crossing, and The Hills does not.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Southo Concrete holds NSW contractor licence 398552C and a general construction induction white card, and carries $20 million public and product liability cover plus workers insurance. Certificates of currency are available on request, along with SWMS where a site needs them, and we can complete site inductions as required.
How long will the concrete last, and will it crack?
We use high-quality materials and proven construction methods to help ensure our work lasts for 25 years or more. We also use appropriate materials and techniques to control cracking in our slabs, helping to keep it very limited, if not eliminate it altogether. Please note that cracking can be affected by factors outside our control, including ground movement, weather and site conditions.
Do you do small concrete repairs in Dural?
No. We take on complete jobs — driveways, shed slabs, hardstand, retaining walls, pool surrounds and outdoor areas — where we control the work from excavation through to finish. We don’t do small patch-up repairs.
