Galston, Berrilee and Fiddletown
Orchard and hydroponic country above Galston Gorge, with five-acre lots and bushland on every side.
Orchards above the gorge
Galston is about 36 km north-west of the Sydney CBD, at about 204 m, with Galston Gorge between it and Hornsby Heights. It is semi-rural, with orchards, hydroponic growing and 5-acre lots. Berrilee sits on the western shore of Berowra Creek, and Fiddletown adjoins Marramarra National Park.

Hornsby crossings need an authorised contractor
Where Galston falls under Hornsby Shire Council, the section of driveway across the council verge is a vehicular crossing, and council says these may only be built by concrete contractors it has authorised. Its specification sets a residential concrete crossing at 125 mm thick, 25 MPa minimum, with one layer of SL62 mesh. Ask who is building yours before the job is booked.

Slabs for growers
Hydroponic and orchard properties need clean, well-drained slabs for packing, storage and machinery. We set falls to floor drains and choose a finish that is easy to hose down.

What we build out here
Driveways and the crossing at the road, shed and machinery slabs, hardstand and turning areas, retaining walls, pool surrounds and large outdoor areas.
Excavation included
We do our own cut, fill and base, so one crew handles the job from the first bucket to the final finish, and one price covers it.
Acreage, not patch-ups
Complete jobs on rural and acreage properties, where access, levels and drainage matter as much as the pour itself.
What goes under a Galston driveway or slab?
Galston is the village at the centre of the Hornsby acreage country, and jobs here run from a standard driveway on a village block to a full hardstand on ten acres.
The base under the slab
Hornsby Shire’s specification requires excavation to the full depth needed for the specified thickness, and where the material underneath is unsuitable — a CBR below 5 — a sub-base of 20 mm fine crushed rock to a minimum depth of 75 mm. On acreage that is usually more digging than a suburban block needs.

Fall, grade and width
Hornsby sets the crossing between 3.5 and 4.5 metres at the kerbline and 2.5 to 3.5 metres at the property boundary, with a maximum gradient of 1 in 4 (25%). Concrete is a minimum 25 MPa at 28 days, at 125 mm with one layer of SL62 mesh for a standard residential crossing, or 150 mm with SL82 for heavy duty.

How your block gets classified
Slabs and footings for a house or habitable building are designed to AS 2870, which classifies a site by how much the ground is expected to move with moisture — Class A and S are stable to slightly reactive, M moderately, H1 and H2 highly, and E extremely. The more reactive the ground, the more the design has to allow for it. That classification comes from a geotechnical soil test on your property, not from a suburb map, and no honest quote assigns one without it.

Your council, and the one next door
This belt is split between two councils, and the difference between them is bigger than most people expect.
Galston is Hornsby Shire
Galston appears in the NSW Electoral Commission’s list of localities for Hornsby Shire. Kenthurst and Annangrove are The Hills only; Arcadia, Galston, Berrilee, Fiddletown and Canoelands are Hornsby only; and Dural, Middle Dural and Glenorie appear in both lists, so the boundary runs through those three.

Under Hornsby
No work may start without written permission, and levels are normally issued within five working days. A vehicular crossing in Hornsby Shire may only be constructed by one of council’s approved Authorised Contractors, carrying public liability insurance of at least $20 million held for six months. Standard residential is 125 mm with one layer of SL62 mesh, at 25 MPa. Council inspects the levels, the formwork and the finished job, with 48 hours notice on the formwork.

Under The Hills
A Vehicular Crossing Request lodged online, paid before residential work commences. The applicant supplies the contractor’s details and a copy of their public liability policy, to a $10 million minimum, and council requires them to be appropriately skilled and experienced. Two inspections — one before any concrete is poured, one at completion — on 24 hours notice.

Driveway approvals in Galston
A new driveway almost always includes the crossing between the road and your boundary. In Galston that part sits on council land under Hornsby Shire, which is the strictest council in this belt — and the only one that says who may build it.
Written permission first
No work may start without written permission from Hornsby Shire Council, and levels are normally issued within five working days of the request.
Authorised Contractors only
Vehicular crossings in Hornsby Shire may only be constructed by one of council’s approved Authorised Contractors, who must carry public liability insurance of a minimum $20 million for a period of six months.
125 mm, and three inspections
A standard residential crossing is 125 mm with one layer of SL62 mesh; heavy duty residential is 150 mm with SL82. Concrete is a minimum 25 MPa at 28 days. Council inspects the levels, the formwork and the finished job, with 48 hours notice required for the formwork inspection.

Local FAQs
Anything else, call 0468 491 882.
Do you do concreting in Galston?
Yes. We build driveways and crossings, shed slabs, hardstand, retaining walls, pool surrounds and outdoor areas for properties in Galston and the surrounding district, including Arcadia, Berrilee, Fiddletown and Dural.
Do you pour packing and hydroponic shed slabs in Galston?
Yes. We excavate, form and pour packing and grow-shed slabs graded to drains, with a finish that is easy to clean. We price the slab and the access driveway together.
Do you also cover Berrilee and Fiddletown?
Yes. We treat Berrilee and Fiddletown as part of the Galston area and work across all of them with the same crew, the same site preparation and the same free on-site quote.
Do I need council approval for a driveway crossing in Galston?
Yes, and Hornsby Shire is the strictest council in this belt. No work may start without written permission from council, levels are normally issued within five working days, and a vehicular crossing in Hornsby Shire may only be constructed by one of council’s approved Authorised Contractors, who must carry public liability insurance of at least $20 million held for six months.
What does Hornsby council require the crossing to be built to?
Concrete of at least 25 MPa at 28 days. A standard residential crossing is 125 mm thick with one layer of SL62 mesh; heavy duty residential is 150 mm with one layer of SL82. Excavation goes to the full depth needed for that thickness, and unsuitable material with a CBR below 5 is replaced with a sub-base of 20 mm fine crushed rock to at least 75 mm. Width is 3.5 to 4.5 metres at the kerbline and 2.5 to 3.5 metres at the boundary, with a maximum gradient of 1 in 4 (25%). Council inspects the levels, the formwork and the finished job, with 48 hours notice on the formwork.
How is that different from The Hills Shire next door?
Materially. The Hills takes a Vehicular Crossing Request online, asks for the contractor’s details and a copy of their public liability policy at a $10 million minimum, and inspects twice on 24 hours notice. Hornsby wants $20 million held for six months, inspects three times, and restricts who may build the crossing at all. Kenthurst and Annangrove are The Hills; Dural, Middle Dural and Glenorie sit on the boundary and could be either.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Galston?
It depends on the length, how much excavation and base preparation the ground needs, whether an old surface comes out, the crossing at the road, and the finish. Out here it also depends on the run in, because distance and access change how a pour has to be staged. The accurate number comes from seeing the site, and quotes are free.
What’s underneath a Galston driveway or slab?
The base is what the finished job stands on, and on acreage it is usually where the time goes. Hornsby’s specification is explicit about it: excavation to the full depth required for the thickness, and unsuitable material with a CBR below 5 replaced with a sub-base of 20 mm fine crushed rock to at least 75 mm. Beyond the crossing, a site classification under AS 2870 comes from a geotechnical soil test on your block, not from a suburb map.
Is Galston in Hornsby or The Hills?
Hornsby Shire. Galston appears in the NSW Electoral Commission’s list of localities within Hornsby Shire and not in The Hills list — unlike Dural, Middle Dural and Glenorie a few kilometres west, which appear in both. Hornsby’s crossing specification is heavier than The Hills’, and Hornsby restricts who is permitted to build one.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Southo Concrete holds NSW contractor licence 398552C and a general construction induction white card, and carries $20 million public and product liability cover plus workers insurance. Certificates of currency are available on request, along with SWMS where a site needs them, and we can complete site inductions as required.
How long will the concrete last, and will it crack?
We use high-quality materials and proven construction methods to help ensure our work lasts for 25 years or more. We also use appropriate materials and techniques to control cracking in our slabs, helping to keep it very limited, if not eliminate it altogether. Please note that cracking can be affected by factors outside our control, including ground movement, weather and site conditions.
Do you do small concrete repairs in Galston?
No. We take on complete jobs — driveways, shed slabs, hardstand, retaining walls, pool surrounds and outdoor areas — where we control the work from excavation through to finish. We don’t do small patch-up repairs.
