Concreters Kenthurst

Concreting for Kenthurst acreage, including long driveways, shed slabs, pool surrounds, retaining walls and large entertaining areas. Bigger properties call for bigger pours, and they only last when the site is prepared properly underneath. We handle the clearing, excavation and prep ourselves, then form, reinforce, pour and finish, from the first dig to handover.

Kenthurst, five-acre country

A semi-rural suburb where the average block is about 2 hectares. Most jobs are long driveways, sheds and outdoor areas.

  • Two hectares on average

Kenthurst is about 39 km north-west of the Sydney CBD in The Hills Shire. It is semi-rural, with average blocks of about 2 hectares (5 acres).

  • Check if your block is bush fire prone

Much of Kenthurst runs down to bushland creeks. Whether a lot is mapped as bush fire prone land is confirmed on the section 10.7 planning certificate from The Hills Shire Council. A new home on mapped land has to meet the NSW Rural Fire Service’s Planning for Bush Fire Protection 2019, which includes rules for property access, so settle it before the driveway is designed.

  • One layout for the whole block

On a 5-acre block, the driveway, shed, turning area and house surrounds all connect. We plan them as one layout and pour in stages, so the levels meet and the water goes where it should.

  • What we build out here

Driveways and the crossing at the road, shed and machinery slabs, hardstand and turning areas, retaining walls, pool surrounds and large outdoor areas.

  • Excavation included

We do our own cut, fill and base, so one crew handles the job from the first bucket to the final finish, and one price covers it.

  • Acreage, not patch-ups

Complete jobs on rural and acreage properties, where access, levels and drainage matter as much as the pour itself.

What goes under a Kenthurst driveway or slab?

Kenthurst is the heart of the Hills acreage belt, and on blocks this size the ground under the shed is rarely the ground under the house.

  • Who is allowed to build it

The Hills lodges a Vehicular Crossing Request online, with payment required before residential work commences. The applicant supplies details of the person carrying out the work plus a copy of their public liability insurance policy, to a $10 million minimum, and council requires the contractor to be appropriately skilled and experienced. Residential jobs get an initial inspection before any concrete is poured and a final inspection at completion, on 24 hours notice.

Source: The Hills Shire Council, Driveways — Vehicular Crossing Request

  • The base under the slab

The base is what the finished slab stands or falls on, and on acreage it rarely matches from one end of a driveway to the other. The Hills publishes its concrete thickness, mesh and gradient requirements in a separate driveway specifications fact sheet.

Source: The Hills Shire Council, Driveways — Vehicular Crossing Request

  • How your block gets classified

Slabs and footings for a house or habitable building are designed to AS 2870, which classifies a site by how much the ground is expected to move with moisture — Class A and S are stable to slightly reactive, M moderately, H1 and H2 highly, and E extremely. The more reactive the ground, the more the design has to allow for it. That classification comes from a geotechnical soil test on your property, not from a suburb map, and no honest quote assigns one without it.

Your council, and the one next door

This belt is split between two councils, and the difference between them is bigger than most people expect.

  • Kenthurst is The Hills Shire

Kenthurst appears in the NSW Electoral Commission’s list of localities for The Hills Shire. Kenthurst and Annangrove are The Hills only; Arcadia, Galston, Berrilee, Fiddletown and Canoelands are Hornsby only; and Dural, Middle Dural and Glenorie appear in both lists, so the boundary runs through those three.

Source: NSW Electoral Commission, council locality listings

  • Under Hornsby

No work may start without written permission, and levels are normally issued within five working days. A vehicular crossing in Hornsby Shire may only be constructed by one of council’s approved Authorised Contractors, carrying public liability insurance of at least $20 million held for six months. Standard residential is 125 mm with one layer of SL62 mesh, at 25 MPa. Council inspects the levels, the formwork and the finished job, with 48 hours notice on the formwork.

  • Under The Hills

A Vehicular Crossing Request lodged online, paid before residential work commences. The applicant supplies the contractor’s details and a copy of their public liability policy, to a $10 million minimum, and council requires them to be appropriately skilled and experienced. Two inspections — one before any concrete is poured, one at completion — on 24 hours notice.

Driveway approvals in Kenthurst

A new driveway almost always includes the crossing between the road and your boundary. In Kenthurst that part sits on council land under The Hills Shire — a lighter process than Hornsby’s, a few kilometres east.

  • Lodge the request online

The Hills Shire takes a Vehicular Crossing Request online, with payment required before residential work commences. For commercial and industrial jobs, work cannot start until the request is accepted by council.

  • Your concreter’s details and policy

The applicant has to supply details of the person carrying out the work and a copy of their public liability insurance policy, to a minimum of $10 million, and council requires the contractor to be appropriately skilled and experienced.

  • Two inspections

Residential driveways get an initial inspection before any concrete is poured and a final inspection at completion, booked with at least 24 hours notice.

Source: The Hills Shire Council, Driveways — Vehicular Crossing Request

Unlike Hornsby next door, The Hills does not restrict who may build the crossing — it asks for the contractor’s details and a copy of their policy. We’ll give you the details you need for the application when we quote. Call 0468 491 882

Local FAQs

Anything else, call 0468 491 882.

Do you do concreting in Kenthurst?

Yes. We build driveways and crossings, shed slabs, hardstand, retaining walls, pool surrounds and outdoor areas for properties in Kenthurst and the surrounding district, including Annangrove, Glenorie, Dural and Middle Dural.

Can you do a driveway, shed slab and turning area together in Kenthurst?

Yes. On acreage we usually plan and quote them as one job. We excavate once and pour in stages so everything meets at the same levels.

Do I need council approval for a driveway crossing in Kenthurst?

Yes. Kenthurst is in The Hills Shire. A Vehicular Crossing Request is lodged online, with payment required before residential work commences, and the applicant has to supply details of the person carrying out the work together with a copy of their public liability insurance policy to a minimum of $10 million.

What does The Hills Shire require the crossing to be built to?

Council publishes its concrete thickness, mesh and gradient requirements in a separate driveway specifications fact sheet, and we would rather point you at council’s own document than paraphrase it. What is certain from the application itself: the contractor must be appropriately skilled and experienced, an initial inspection happens before any concrete is poured, a final inspection follows at completion, and inspections need at least 24 hours notice.

Is it the same in Dural or Galston?

No, and this is the thing people get caught by. Galston, Arcadia, Berrilee, Fiddletown and Canoelands are Hornsby Shire, which requires a thicker crossing at 125 mm with SL62 mesh, $20 million public liability held for six months, three inspections, and construction by one of council’s approved Authorised Contractors. Dural, Middle Dural and Glenorie appear in both councils’ locality lists, so the boundary runs through them.

How much does a concrete driveway cost in Kenthurst?

It depends on the length, how much excavation and base preparation the ground needs, whether an old surface comes out, the crossing at the road, and the finish. Out here it also depends on the run in, because distance and access change how a pour has to be staged. The accurate number comes from seeing the site, and quotes are free.

What’s underneath a Kenthurst driveway or slab?

The base is what the finished job stands on, and on acreage it is usually where the time goes. Hornsby’s specification is explicit about it: excavation to the full depth required for the thickness, and unsuitable material with a CBR below 5 replaced with a sub-base of 20 mm fine crushed rock to at least 75 mm. Beyond the crossing, a site classification under AS 2870 comes from a geotechnical soil test on your block, not from a suburb map.

Is Kenthurst in The Hills Shire or Hornsby?

The Hills Shire. Kenthurst appears in the NSW Electoral Commission’s list of localities within The Hills Shire and not in the Hornsby list — unlike Dural, Middle Dural and Glenorie next door, which appear in both. That is worth knowing, because Hornsby restricts who is allowed to build a vehicular crossing and The Hills does not.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Southo Concrete holds NSW contractor licence 398552C and a general construction induction white card, and carries $20 million public and product liability cover plus workers insurance. Certificates of currency are available on request, along with SWMS where a site needs them, and we can complete site inductions as required.

How long will the concrete last, and will it crack?

We use high-quality materials and proven construction methods to help ensure our work lasts for 25 years or more. We also use appropriate materials and techniques to control cracking in our slabs, helping to keep it very limited, if not eliminate it altogether. Please note that cracking can be affected by factors outside our control, including ground movement, weather and site conditions.

Do you do small concrete repairs in Kenthurst?

No. We take on complete jobs — driveways, shed slabs, hardstand, retaining walls, pool surrounds and outdoor areas — where we control the work from excavation through to finish. We don’t do small patch-up repairs.
