Concreters Kurrajong
Concreting for Kurrajong properties, including long driveways, shed slabs, retaining walls and outdoor areas. Sloping blocks and tight access are common here, and that’s where a lot of concreters bow out. We do the clearing, excavation and site prep ourselves, then form, reinforce, pour and finish, so one crew takes your site from bare ground to finished concrete.

Kurrajong, from the village to the ridge
One postcode, four localities and a big change in height between them. That shapes how a driveway or slab gets built here more than anything else.
A 350-metre climb in one postcode
Kurrajong village sits about 150 m above sea level on the Bells Line of Road, 8 km north-west of Richmond. Kurrajong Hills is at about 230 m, and Kurrajong Heights, further up the same road towards Bilpin, is at about 495 m. All of it shares the 2758 postcode.

Steep blocks need a different driveway
On the slopes up to the Heights, most of the work is in the levels. We cut and fill to get a workable grade, give the surface a broom finish so it grips in the wet, set falls so water runs off the driveway rather than down it, and pump the concrete in where a truck can’t get close. The crossing at the road still has to stay between 2% and 8% fall under Hawkesbury City Council’s specification.

Check if your block is bush fire prone
Much of the country around Kurrajong Heights and Kurrajong Hills is bushland. Whether a property is mapped as bush fire prone land is shown on Hawkesbury City Council’s Bush Fire Prone Land Map and the NSW Planning Portal. If a new home is going on mapped land, it has to meet the NSW Rural Fire Service’s Planning for Bush Fire Protection 2019, which includes rules for property access, so it’s worth settling before the driveway is designed.

What we build out here
Driveways and the crossing at the road, shed and machinery slabs, hardstand and turning areas, retaining walls, pool surrounds and large outdoor areas.
Excavation included
We do our own cut, fill and base, so one crew handles the job from the first bucket to the final finish, and one price covers it.
Acreage, not patch-ups
Complete jobs on rural and acreage properties, where access, levels and drainage matter as much as the pour itself.
What goes under a Kurrajong driveway or slab?
Kurrajong runs from village blocks near the shops out to acreage on the slopes, and the ground under a slab is rarely the same at both ends of the suburb.
-
The base under the slab
Hawkesbury City Council’s driveway specification sets the floor. Where the subgrade material is unsatisfactory, it has to be removed and replaced with a minimum of 150 mm of approved sandstone or road base material. On a non-granular subgrade, the slab is placed on a 25 mm layer of sand. On acreage that usually means more excavation than the same driveway would need on a suburban block.

Fall, grade and width
The crossing has to fall at a minimum of 1:48 (2%) and a maximum of 1:12 (8%) from your boundary to the layback, with a minimum width of three metres at the kerb and gutter line. On a steep or high frontage that constraint often decides where the driveway can come in, before anything else is settled.

How your block gets classified
Slabs and footings for a house or habitable building are designed to AS 2870, which classifies a site by how much the ground is expected to move with moisture — Class A and S are stable to slightly reactive, M moderately, H1 and H2 highly, and E extremely. The more reactive the ground, the more the design has to allow for it. That classification comes from a geotechnical soil test on your property, not from a suburb map, and no honest quote assigns one without it.

Driveway approvals in Kurrajong
A new driveway almost always includes the crossing between the road and your boundary. In Kurrajong that part sits on council land, and Hawkesbury City Council sets exactly how it has to be built.
Lodge the agreement form first
Before any construction work starts, the owner or contractor has to complete and submit Hawkesbury City Council’s Agreement Form for Driveways, with the required fee.
Your concreter’s insurance
Council requires all contractors to carry public risk insurance with a minimum cover of $20 million, and to be able to show evidence of the policy before starting work.
Built to spec, and inspected
A minimum 100 mm of 25 MPa concrete with a single layer of SL72 mesh for residential, or 150 mm with two layers for heavy duty. Council carries out one inspection with the formwork and steel in place, on a minimum of 24 hours notice.

Local FAQs
Anything else, call 0468 491 882.
Do you do concreting in Kurrajong?
Yes. We build driveways and crossings, shed slabs, hardstand, retaining walls, pool surrounds and outdoor areas for properties in Kurrajong and the surrounding district, including Kurrajong Hills, Kurrajong Heights, Kurmond and Grose Vale.
Can you concrete a steep driveway in Kurrajong Heights?
Yes. Steep driveways are a large part of our work around the Heights. We excavate and set the grade ourselves, use a broom finish for grip, add falls and a channel drain where water would otherwise run down the driveway, and pump the concrete when the truck can’t reach the pour. The section at the road has to stay within Hawkesbury City Council’s 2% to 8% crossing fall, which sometimes decides where the driveway can start.
Do you also cover Kurrajong Heights, Kurrajong Hills, East Kurrajong and Blaxlands Ridge?
Yes. We treat Kurrajong Heights, Kurrajong Hills, East Kurrajong and Blaxlands Ridge as part of the Kurrajong area and work across all of them with the same crew, the same site preparation and the same free on-site quote.
Do I need council approval for a driveway crossing in Kurrajong?
Yes. Kurrajong is in the Hawkesbury local government area. Before any work starts on the crossing between the road and your boundary, the owner or contractor has to lodge Hawkesbury City Council’s Agreement Form for Driveways with the required fee. Council also requires the contractor to carry public risk insurance with a minimum cover of $20 million and to show evidence of it before starting.
What does Hawkesbury council require a driveway crossing to be built to?
Council’s driveway specification sets a minimum compressive strength of 25 MPa at 28 days in accordance with AS 3600. A residential crossing is a minimum 100 mm of concrete with a single layer of SL72 mesh; heavy duty is a minimum 150 mm with two layers. Reinforcement sits on bar chairs at a maximum of one metre spacing, about 25 mm below the finished level, and council inspects once with the formwork and steel in place, on 24 hours notice.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Kurrajong?
It depends on the length, how much excavation and base preparation the ground needs, whether an old surface comes out, the crossing at the road, and the finish. Acreage driveways vary far more than suburban ones, so the accurate number comes from seeing the site. Quotes are free.
What’s underneath a Kurrajong driveway or slab?
Council’s specification is the floor: where the subgrade material is unsatisfactory it has to be removed and replaced with a minimum of 150 mm of approved sandstone or road base, and on a non-granular subgrade the slab is placed on a 25 mm layer of sand. Beyond that, a site classification under AS 2870 comes from a geotechnical soil test on your block, not from a suburb map.
Do you work on both village blocks and acreage in Kurrajong?
Yes. The same crew does a standard driveway and crossing on a village block and a shed slab or hardstand on acreage. The difference is usually how much excavation and base work sits underneath, which is what we look at when we quote.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Southo Concrete holds NSW contractor licence 398552C and a general construction induction white card, and carries $20 million public and product liability cover plus workers insurance. Certificates of currency are available on request, along with SWMS where a site needs them, and we can complete site inductions as required.
How long will the concrete last, and will it crack?
We use high-quality materials and proven construction methods to help ensure our work lasts for 25 years or more. We also use appropriate materials and techniques to control cracking in our slabs, helping to keep it very limited, if not eliminate it altogether. Please note that cracking can be affected by factors outside our control, including ground movement, weather and site conditions.
Do you do small concrete repairs in Kurrajong?
No. We take on complete jobs — driveways, shed slabs, hardstand, retaining walls, pool surrounds and outdoor areas — where we control the work from excavation through to finish. We don’t do small patch-up repairs.
