Who does concreting in Putty?
Southo Concrete is a licensed concreting contractor working in Putty, NSW 2330. We build shed slabs, driveways, hardstand, retaining walls and rural concrete for rural properties across Putty, and we do the excavation and site preparation ourselves. The Hawkesbury and Singleton boundary runs through Putty, so the first thing to settle on a driveway here is which council assesses it. The same applies across Howes Valley.

Putty and Howes Valley
A wide valley on the Putty Road between Windsor and Singleton, where the farms run to the edges of the national parks.
Between Windsor and Singleton
Putty lies on the Putty Road, about 91 km from Windsor and 81 km from Singleton, in a wide valley. Its holdings reach the Wollemi National Park, Putty State Forest and Yengo National Park, and are used for livestock and hobby farms.

Hawkesbury or Singleton council?
Putty straddles Hawkesbury and Singleton councils, and Howes Valley, further north on the Putty Road, is in Singleton. We check which council your property is in before we quote, because that council sets the rules for anything at the road.
Rural slabs a long drive out
For sheds, yards and machinery pads at Putty we plan the job to the fewest possible truck loads and have everything formed before the first truck leaves.

What we build out here
Driveways and the crossing at the road, shed and machinery slabs, hardstand and turning areas, retaining walls, pool surrounds and large outdoor areas.
Excavation included
We do our own cut, fill and base, so one crew handles the job from the first bucket to the final finish, and one price covers it.
Acreage, not patch-ups
Complete jobs on rural and acreage properties, where access, levels and drainage matter as much as the pour itself.
What goes under a Putty driveway or slab?
Putty sits high on the road between Windsor and Singleton, and it is one of the few localities where the council that assesses your driveway is a genuine question.
Two councils, one locality
If your block falls on the Hawkesbury side, the crossing is a minimum 100 mm of 25 MPa concrete with a single layer of SL72 mesh, at a grade between 1:48 and 1:12, and where there is no kerb and gutter the gutter invert sits at least 2.2 metres back from the edge of the bitumen seal. If it falls on the Singleton side, the work is approved as section 138 works under the Roads Act 1993 against council’s own Engineering Construction Specifications.

The base under the slab
Under the Hawkesbury specification, an unsatisfactory subgrade has to be removed and replaced with a minimum of 150 mm of approved sandstone or road base, and a non-granular subgrade gets a 25 mm layer of sand beneath the slab. On ridge country that is usually more excavation than a suburban block needs, whichever council ends up assessing it.

How your block gets classified
Slabs and footings for a house or habitable building are designed to AS 2870, which classifies a site by how much the ground is expected to move with moisture — Class A and S are stable to slightly reactive, M moderately, H1 and H2 highly, and E extremely. The more reactive the ground, the more the design has to allow for it. That classification comes from a geotechnical soil test on your property, not from a suburb map, and no honest quote assigns one without it.

Getting a concrete truck to your block in Putty
Out here the run in is a design constraint, not a detail. It gets settled before the pour is booked.
-
Concrete has a clock on it
Ready-mixed concrete is supplied under AS 1379, which governs how it is specified and delivered, including limits on the working life between batching and placement. The practical effect on a remote block is that the distance from the batching plant is part of the job specification — not something to find out on the morning of the pour. We confirm the run and the limits with the plant before booking.

The road in
Putty is a long run north up Putty Road from Windsor. Beyond the sealed road, what decides the job is the private access track: its width, its grade, the turning space at the pour, and how it behaves after rain. We look at all four before quoting rather than on the day.
Access is assessed on site before quoting, not assumed from a map.

What we do about it
We sequence the loads so nobody is waiting, bring our own excavation so a second machine is not a second trip, and use a pump where a truck cannot make the last stretch. A job out here is priced as a proper day, which is why we would rather take a full driveway, shed slab or hardstand than a small repair that cannot justify the run.
Quotes are free, and we will tell you if the job is not worth the trip.

Driveway approvals in Putty
A new driveway almost always includes the crossing between the road and your boundary. In Putty, the first question is not how it gets built — it is which council assesses it.
First, find out whose it is
The NSW Electoral Commission lists Putty among the localities included wholly or partly in Hawkesbury City Council, and also among those included wholly or partly in Singleton Council. The boundary runs through the locality. Your rates notice or section 10.7 planning certificate names the council that assesses your block.

If it’s Hawkesbury
An Agreement Form for Driveways lodged with the fee before work starts, $20 million public risk insurance with evidence shown beforehand, a minimum 100 mm of 25 MPa concrete with a single layer of SL72 mesh, a grade between 1:48 and 1:12, and one inspection with the formwork and steel in place on 24 hours notice.

If it’s Singleton
A section 138 certificate under the Roads Act 1993, which covers construction and reconstruction of driveways, with the technical requirements taken from council’s Engineering Construction Specifications.

Local FAQs
Anything else, call 0468 491 882.
Do you do concreting in Putty?
Yes. We build driveways and crossings, shed slabs, hardstand, retaining walls, pool surrounds and outdoor areas for properties in Putty and the surrounding district, including Colo Heights, Howes Valley, Colo and Central Colo.
Do you travel to Putty and Howes Valley?
Yes. We quote Putty Road jobs with travel built in, and plan pours so the trucks make as few trips as possible.
Do you also cover Howes Valley?
Yes. We treat Howes Valley as part of the Putty area and work across both with the same crew, the same site preparation and the same free on-site quote. Howes Valley is in the Singleton local government area, so the driveway crossing there is approved by that council rather than the one covering Putty.
Do I need council approval for a driveway in Putty?
Yes — the question is which council. The NSW Electoral Commission lists Putty among the localities included wholly or partly in Hawkesbury City Council, and also among those included wholly or partly in Singleton Council, so the boundary runs through the locality. Your rates notice or your section 10.7 planning certificate names the council that assesses your block.
What are the two pathways?
Under Hawkesbury: an Agreement Form for Driveways lodged with the fee before work starts, $20 million public risk insurance with evidence shown beforehand, a minimum 100 mm of 25 MPa concrete with a single layer of SL72 mesh, a grade between 1:48 and 1:12, and one inspection with the formwork and steel in place on 24 hours notice. Under Singleton: a section 138 certificate under the Roads Act 1993, built to council’s Engineering Construction Specifications.
Does the council boundary change how the slab itself is built?
Not the slab on your own land — that follows AS 2870 and the engineering for your site either way. It changes the crossing between the road and your boundary, which sits on council land, and it changes who you apply to and under what mechanism.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Putty?
It depends on the length, how much excavation and base preparation the ground needs, whether an old surface comes out, the crossing at the road, and the finish. Out here it also depends on the run in, because distance and access change how a pour has to be staged. The accurate number comes from seeing the site, and quotes are free.
What’s underneath a Putty driveway or slab?
The base is what the finished job stands on, and council sets a minimum for the crossing at the road. Beyond that, a site classification under AS 2870 comes from a geotechnical soil test on your block, not from a suburb map. On acreage the base is usually where the time goes.
Which council covers Putty?
Both, depending on where your block sits. The NSW Electoral Commission lists Putty among the localities included wholly or partly in Hawkesbury City Council, and also among those included wholly or partly in Singleton Council — the boundary runs through the locality. Your rates notice or section 10.7 planning certificate names the council that assesses your block, and the two use different approval mechanisms.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Southo Concrete holds NSW contractor licence 398552C and a general construction induction white card, and carries $20 million public and product liability cover plus workers insurance. Certificates of currency are available on request, along with SWMS where a site needs them, and we can complete site inductions as required.
How long will the concrete last, and will it crack?
We use high-quality materials and proven construction methods to help ensure our work lasts for 25 years or more. We also use appropriate materials and techniques to control cracking in our slabs, helping to keep it very limited, if not eliminate it altogether. Please note that cracking can be affected by factors outside our control, including ground movement, weather and site conditions.
Do you do small concrete repairs in Putty?
No. We take on complete jobs — driveways, shed slabs, hardstand, retaining walls, pool surrounds and outdoor areas — where we control the work from excavation through to finish. We don’t do small patch-up repairs.
