Concreters Maroota
Concreting for Maroota rural and farm properties, from long driveways and machinery shed slabs to house pads, retaining walls and outdoor areas. Working land needs concrete that handles heavy use, and that starts with how the ground is prepared. We do the earthworks and the concrete ourselves, so the job runs as one piece from start to finish.

Who does concreting in Maroota?
Southo Concrete is a licensed concreting contractor working in Maroota, NSW 2756. We build shed slabs, driveways, hardstand, retaining walls and rural concrete for acreage and rural properties across Maroota, and we do the excavation and site preparation ourselves. Maroota and South Maroota
Sandy ridge country 200 metres up on the Old Northern Road, split between two councils and known for its orchards and sand mining.
Sand on the ridge
Maroota is about 49 km from the Sydney CBD on the Old Northern Road, at about 200 m above sea level. Its sandy soil holds groundwater and is used for orchards and sand mining. South Maroota, in The Hills Shire, has the Hawkesbury River along part of its western boundary.

Hornsby crossings need an authorised contractor
Where Maroota falls under Hornsby Shire Council, the section of driveway across the council verge is a vehicular crossing, and council says these may only be built by concrete contractors it has authorised. Its specification sets a residential concrete crossing at 125 mm thick, 25 MPa minimum, with one layer of SL62 mesh. Ask who is building yours before the job is booked.

Driveways on sandy ground
Sandy soil drains well but moves at the edges. We compact the base in layers, thicken the slab edges and run the concrete a little wider than the wheel path.

What we build out here
Driveways and the crossing at the road, shed and machinery slabs, hardstand and turning areas, retaining walls, pool surrounds and large outdoor areas.
Excavation included
We do our own cut, fill and base, so one crew handles the job from the first bucket to the final finish, and one price covers it.
Acreage, not patch-ups
Complete jobs on rural and acreage properties, where access, levels and drainage matter as much as the pour itself.
What goes under a Maroota driveway or slab?
Maroota sits on the ridge above the river on Old Northern Road, and it is the one locality here where which council you are in is a real question rather than a formality.
-
Two specifications, one locality
Hornsby Shire requires a standard residential crossing at 125 mm with one layer of SL62 mesh, or 150 mm with SL82 for heavy duty, with a maximum gradient of 1 in 4 (25%) and a width of 3.5 to 4.5 metres at the kerbline. The Hills Shire runs a different application and publishes its figures separately. Which one applies to your block depends on where the boundary falls.

The base under the slab
Under Hornsby’s specification, excavation goes to the full depth required for the thickness, and unsuitable material — a CBR below 5 — is replaced with a sub-base of 20 mm fine crushed rock to a minimum depth of 75 mm. On ridge acreage that is usually more digging than a suburban block needs, whichever council ends up assessing it.

How your block gets classified
Slabs and footings for a house or habitable building are designed to AS 2870, which classifies a site by how much the ground is expected to move with moisture — Class A and S are stable to slightly reactive, M moderately, H1 and H2 highly, and E extremely. The more reactive the ground, the more the design has to allow for it. That classification comes from a geotechnical soil test on your property, not from a suburb map, and no honest quote assigns one without it.

Getting a concrete truck to your block in Maroota
Maroota is reached by road rather than by ferry, but the run in is still the first thing we look at.
Ridge access, not river access
Maroota sits up on the ridge along Old Northern Road rather than down on the river, so a concrete truck gets here by road and the ferry timetables that govern the riverside suburbs do not apply. What matters instead is the private access track, the turning space at the pour and the distance from the road.
Access is assessed on site before quoting, not assumed from a map.
The ferries below, if you need them
The Sackville, Lower Portland, Wisemans Ferry and Webbs Creek crossings are all operated by Transport for NSW and are affected by river conditions. They matter here only if a job sits on the river side of the ridge, or if the run to it comes up from the Hawkesbury rather than down Old Northern Road.

What we do about it
We check the access track, the gates and the turning space before quoting, and sequence the loads so nobody is waiting on the road. Where a truck cannot make the last stretch, a pump covers it. On long frontages that is the difference between a straightforward job and an expensive one.
Access is assessed on site before quoting, not assumed from a map.

Driveway approvals in Maroota
A new driveway almost always includes the crossing between the road and your boundary. In Maroota, the first question is not how it gets built — it is which council assesses it.
First, find out whose it is
Hornsby Shire lists Maroota among the localities in its Ward A. The Hills Shire shows Maroota and South Maroota on its gazetted ward boundary map. Maroota is not in the Hawkesbury local government area — it appears on neither Hawkesbury’s suburb boundary maps nor the Electoral Commission’s list of Hawkesbury localities. Your rates notice or section 10.7 planning certificate settles it for your block.
If it’s Hornsby
Written permission before any work, a crossing only built by one of council’s approved Authorised Contractors carrying $20 million public liability for six months, 125 mm with one layer of SL62 mesh for standard residential, and three inspections with 48 hours notice on the formwork.
Source: Hornsby Shire Council, Vehicular Crossing Specification (revised March 2023)
If it’s The Hills
A Vehicular Crossing Request lodged online with payment before work starts, the contractor’s details and a copy of their public liability policy to a $10 million minimum, and two inspections — one before any concrete is poured and one at completion — on 24 hours notice.

Local FAQs
Anything else, call 0468 491 882.
Do you do concreting in Maroota?
Yes. We build driveways and crossings, shed slabs, hardstand, retaining walls, pool surrounds and outdoor areas for properties in Maroota and the surrounding district, including South Maroota, Wisemans Ferry, Laughtondale and Sackville.
Is Maroota in The Hills or Hornsby council?
Both. Maroota is split between The Hills Shire and Hornsby Shire, and South Maroota is in The Hills. The council that owns your road sets the rules for the driveway crossing, so we check that before we quote.
Do you also cover South Maroota?
Yes. We treat South Maroota as part of the Maroota area and work across both with the same crew, the same site preparation and the same free on-site quote. South Maroota is in the The Hills Shire local government area, so the driveway crossing there is approved by that council rather than the one covering Maroota.
Do I need council approval for a driveway crossing in Maroota?
Yes — the question is which council. Hornsby Shire lists Maroota among the localities in its Ward A, and The Hills Shire shows Maroota on its gazetted ward boundary map, so the boundary runs through this area. Maroota is not in the Hawkesbury local government area. Your rates notice or your section 10.7 planning certificate names the council that assesses your block.
What are the two specifications?
Under Hornsby: written permission before any work, a crossing built only by one of council’s approved Authorised Contractors carrying $20 million public liability for six months, 125 mm with one layer of SL62 mesh for standard residential or 150 mm with SL82 heavy duty, a maximum gradient of 1 in 4, and three inspections. Under The Hills: an online Vehicular Crossing Request with payment up front, the contractor’s details and a copy of their public liability policy to a $10 million minimum, and two inspections on 24 hours notice.
Does the council boundary change how the slab itself is built?
Not the slab on your own land — that follows AS 2870 and the engineering for your site either way. It changes the crossing between the road and your boundary, which sits on council land, and it changes who you apply to and who is permitted to build it.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Maroota?
It depends on the length, how much excavation and base preparation the ground needs, whether an old surface comes out, the crossing at the road, and the finish. Out here it also depends on the run in — distance, access and whether a ferry is on the route. The accurate number comes from seeing the site, and quotes are free.
What’s underneath a Maroota driveway or slab?
The base is what the finished job stands on, and council sets a minimum for the crossing at the road. Beyond that, a site classification under AS 2870 comes from a geotechnical soil test on your block, not from a suburb map. On acreage the base is usually where the time goes.
Which council is my Maroota property in?
Check your rates notice, or your section 10.7 planning certificate. Hornsby Shire lists Maroota among the localities in its Ward A, and The Hills Shire shows Maroota and South Maroota on its own gazetted ward boundary map, so the boundary runs through this area. It is not in the Hawkesbury local government area — Maroota does not appear on Hawkesbury’s suburb boundary maps or in the Electoral Commission’s list of Hawkesbury localities. The answer matters, because Hornsby and The Hills require different crossings.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Southo Concrete holds NSW contractor licence 398552C and a general construction induction white card, and carries $20 million public and product liability cover plus workers insurance. Certificates of currency are available on request, along with SWMS where a site needs them, and we can complete site inductions as required.
How long will the concrete last, and will it crack?
We use high-quality materials and proven construction methods to help ensure our work lasts for 25 years or more. We also use appropriate materials and techniques to control cracking in our slabs, helping to keep it very limited, if not eliminate it altogether. Please note that cracking can be affected by factors outside our control, including ground movement, weather and site conditions.
Do you do small concrete repairs in Maroota?
No. We take on complete jobs — driveways, shed slabs, hardstand, retaining walls, pool surrounds and outdoor areas — where we control the work from excavation through to finish. We don’t do small patch-up repairs.
